About Merv Ratings

There is often much confusion around filter efficiency ratings and what they mean. The standard industry rating system for filter efficiency is Merv, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. When filter manufactures use other in house rating systems, they are often just trying to prevent you from being able to compare their expensive filters to much cheaper no name ones! Think Home Depot. Learning about this system and how it works can be very beneficial in helping you select the correct filters for your application and will almost always save you time and money.

What is a MERV 8 Filter?

  • Greater than 70% efficient at controlling particles in the 3-10 micron size range
  • Has a 30-35% dust spot efficiency (ability to remove atmospheric dust)
  • Has an arrestance greater than 90% (ability to remove synthetic dust)

What is a MERV 10 Filter?

  • 50-65% efficient at controlling particles in the 1-3 micron size range
  • Greater than 85% efficient at controlling particles in the 3-10 micron size range
  • Has a 50-55% dust spot efficiency (ability to remove atmospheric dust)
  • Has an arrestance greater than 95% (ability to remove synthetic dust)

What is a MERV 11 Filter?

  • 65-80% efficient at controlling particles in the 1-3 micron size range
  • Greater than 85% efficient at controlling particles in the 3-10 micron size range
  • Has a 60-65% dust spot efficiency (ability to remove atmospheric dust)
  • Has an arrestance greater than 95% (ability to remove synthetic dust)

What is a MERV 13 Filter?

  • Up to 75% efficient at controlling particles in the 0.3-1.0 micron size range
  • Greater than 90% efficient at controlling particles in the 1-3 micron size range
  • Greater than 90% efficient at controlling particles in the 3-10 micron size range
  • Has a 80-90% dust spot efficiency (ability to remove atmospheric dust)
  • Has an arrestance greater than 98% (ability to remove synthetic dust)
